Part 3 – When NOT to Use Technology: The Nitty Gritty

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

“Cutting -edge technology is as perishable as a truckload of ripe bananas;
it’s worth a fortune today, but if not used quickly, it becomes worthless.”
William Knoke, Bold New World (1996)
It seems that the theme of faculty training is the key of the positive technology experience … for faculty and students. A major goal of technology needs [...]

Where do I store files to access whether PC or Mac or anywhere in the world?

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I read the following Wall Street Journal blog quite interesting. As a dual platform person who travels a lot around the world, access is a problem. Sometimes I’m on my PC and other times I’m on the Mac. Sometimes at home, sometimes at work, and sometimes on the road. SugarSync.com could be a viable option. [...]

Part 2 – When NOT to Use Technology: A trend is happening

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

“Just for that Johnny, you don’t get to use the computer today!”
Ouch … technology used as a punishment is as bad as making a kid do push-ups in Phys Ed class as a punishment. One of the first things we need to learn is to not use a technology activity as a punishment OR reward. [...]

Social Studies and Food Wars

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

My wife Darlene, a School Library and Information Technology specialist, pointed out to me an amazing video. Food Fight: An Abridged History of War, by Stefan Nadelman, illustrates major conflicts in recent world history. All of this is done with ethnic food which represents a country. This would be a great discussion starter [...]

Are you a struggling Digital Immigrant? You’ve got company.

Monday, April 7th, 2008

While at the EARCOS teacher’s conference in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month, I watched a video that says it all. The scene takes place a few years ago … well maybe 1500 years ago. Imagine the struggle with technology around the time of Gutenburg and the issues he faced when he created books. You can [...]

Is it a reliable website?

Monday, April 7th, 2008

… when you see it? Kids will believe anything just because it’s on the web. Here is a website for kids to research … it’s all about the Northwest Tree Octopus. It is so cool … BUT … it’s all fake. You can really use it as a research assignment and have kids find more [...]

Vodcasting your newsletters

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Sometimes I scare myself with the outrageous ideas I have. I’m going into a writing unit and using vodcasting as the mass media to reach an authentic audience. Here’s the first example I put out there for my fifth grade class. It’s only 2.5 minutes long but effective at getting out the word.
