Social Studies and Food Wars

My wife Darlene, a School Library and Information Technology specialist, pointed out to me an amazing video. Food Fight: An Abridged History of War, by Stefan Nadelman, illustrates major conflicts in recent world history. All of this is done with ethnic food which represents a country. This would be a great discussion starter for your students, especially those social studies classes.

I suggest watching it first. If you’re stumped trying to figure out which food represents which country, there is a helpful hints page which will set you right.

Simply amazing. Art Costa in his workshop at EARCOS, Learning to Listen with Skill and Empathy, stated that 85% of all communication is done without words. This video certainly helps prove that point. Actually, he stated that only 7% of communication is with words.

As always, enjoy.

Your blog caught my eye while I was looking through the blogs. I am currently a high school social studies teacher, and I do cover different wars. I have taught world history classes in the past, but I am currently teaching modern history classes, so since this covers major conflicts in recent world history, I may be able to use this in my class soon. Plus, my students favorite conversations deals with their favorite foods, so I feel they would enjoy this a lot. I am currently on my schools computer, so the video is being blocked, but when I get home I will watch it, and I will get back to you with some questions.

I believe that in schools and universities need to draw more attention to pupils and students in modern history and political situation in the country, but the past of course can not be overlooked. I saw an interesting article on the site http://www.queentorrent.com
which is described as working with students in a university.
